Vermillion Meet

Cross Country Parents:

Here’s the information regarding the Vermilion Invitational. The race is at Vermilion High School. IT WILL BE VERY COLD TOMORROW MORNING SO MAKE SURE ATHLETES DRESS WARM! Bring extra pairs of socks, dress in layers, and bring sandals for the ride home. Here are the race details:

·         Athletes need to be at Learwood at 6:00 a.m.

·         Bus leaves at 6:15 a.m.

·         Girls’ Team runs at 8:30 a.m.

Julia, Allie, Audrey, Juliana, Rachel, Emily, and Sarah

·         Boys’ Team runs at 9:00 a.m.

Patrick, Brandon, Ryan, Alex, Josh, George, and Robert

·         Girls’ Open runs at 9:30 a.m.

·         Boys’ Open runs at 10:00 a.m.

·         Our estimated time of arrival back at Learwood is 11:45 a.m. We will have athletes call home when we are almost back in Avon Lake!

About the team:

1)      I am keeping a Cross Country Lost & Found in my classroom. It is filling up fast! If anyone is missing anything, please stop by room 404!

2)      We have two weeks left in the season! We will be communicating a lot of things over the next couple of weeks regarding our end-of-season

plans. This is the fun part of the season and we are looking forward to the SWC Championship Meet!

3)      This is the time of year for athletes to start eating healthy! Athletes need to stay hydrated (lots of water) these next two weeks, and they need to start eating healthy. One (small) dessert per day is all right, but other than that athletes should avoid all other unhealthy food/drink.

FOODS TO AVOID

Soda (NO SODA)

Candy

Sweets

Chips/Junk Food

RECOMMENDED FOODS

Fruits/Veggies (salads are great)

Whole Grains

Chicken

Fish

Pasta (carb loading)

For snacks…granola bars, crackers, pretzels (skip the chips, cookies, and candy bars!)

We’re going to Dairy Queen after SWCs, and we can all pig out then. Until then, ALL athletes should be picky eaters!

4)      Athletes also need to get rest these next two weeks. Athletes of this age group need a little over 9 hours of sleep per night. While this may not always be feasible, they should try to catch up on sleep on the weekends. Parents, I normally do not tell athletes to stay home on Friday nights, and since this is Homecoming Weekend, I know people will want to go to the game Friday night. However, after this weekend I would STRONGLY ENCOURAGE all athletes to start catching up on their rest. These next two weeks are crucial in their season-long recovery!

5)      Please check your running shoes to make sure they are holding up! We’ve been running for almost 3 months, some of you have been running for even longer. Check to make sure your shoes are not worn out! I can check your shoes at practice if you want. I know this is an expense, but running shoes are something you can always use. We will be running in the off-season and during track season so they will not go to waste!

Looking forward to seeing you all on Saturday!

Cloverleaf

ere's the information regarding the Colt C.C. Cloverleaf Invitational:
  • Athletes need to be at Learwood at 6 a.m.
  • Bus leaves at 6:15 a.m.
  • Girls' Open runs at 8:40 a.m.
  • Girls' Team runs at 9:05 a.m. -- TBA
  • Boys' Open runs at 9:50 a.m.
  • Boys' Team runs at 10:10 a.m. -- TBA
  • We should be back by 12:15 p.m. (no later than 12:30 p.m.)
About the meet:
  • Bring something to eat as it will be another longer day
  • Parents, there is usually an admission fee of $3 for this meet. This should be the only meet where they charge people!
  • Keep signing out athletes with Coach Walters at the finish line. Thanks for your cooperation! She will be very close to the chute area, and our campsite will be very close to the finish!
  • Concessions & shirts will be available at this race
About the team:
  • There are still a lot of missing items in my classroom (including a pair of girls' running shoes). We've told the athletes and we've had everyone check the missing items, but there are still a lot of unclaimed items.
  • We are going to rest several of the team runners on both the boys and girls' sides for this meet. We are doing this for a few reasons:
            1)    We wanted to rest our team runners for one race this season, and some time in the middle of the season is the ideal time to do so
            2)    Some of the team runners have health issues that we've been monitoring this season and they need some rest
            3)    Resting the team runners gives our open runners a chance to 'bump up' to team and see what it will be like for them in the future
            4)    Our varsity teams have done this for a few years now and we've noticed a few other middle school teams resting their teams once a season
            5)    Lastly, they just need a break! It's a long season and our only goal is to have everyone at peak performance at SWC Championship.
  • Team runners not competing on Saturday still need to travel with the team. They are going to get a workout in at Cloverleaf, and they will be cheering on the rest of the team on Saturday. It's important they get a workout in that day! After their workout, they will help us out and help cheer on their fellow teammates.
  • Any team member who is resting on Saturday will still keep their spot on team for the Vermilion Invitational. Vermilion is the last race for Team/Open delineations...the last two races will have the whole team running together!
Looking forward to seeing you all on Saturday!

·

Our estimated time of arrival back at Learwood is noon (we have to be back by then as the bus drivers have another route shortly afterwards. We will have athletes call home when we are almost back in Avon Lake!

·                We are dealing with a lot of injuries this week so if there are any changes to the team/open races we will notify the team!

Some reminders about the meet:

Bring something to eat as it will be a long ride home.

·    Parents, the directions to this meet can be tricky. We will be at Wadsworth Memorial Park in Wadsworth, Ohio 44281. The park is in the center of town where the football stadium is located. Bring your GPS and make sure to leave a bit early! Directions are on the blog!

·    Make sure to sign out your child with Coach Walters. She will either be at the start/finish line (this meet’s start/finish is in the same area) or the team campsite (which is also close to the start/finish). Only parents can sign out their children, they cannot sign out other athletes.

·    This race’s results will NOT be online for this race—this race is run old-school so we may need help at the finish line tomorrow.

·    This course, as long as they have not changed it, is awesome! It’s a medium-sized meet with some great teams, and it’s fun to watch the runners at this location.

·

About the team:

·          I washed all the missing clothes from last week’s meet—they are in my classroom. There are a lot of items!

This meet will help determine who runs team/open races at next week’s Cloverleaf Invitational. The top 7 runners will be on team, all other runners will be open runners, but all runners will have the opportunity to run. We may have to make adjustments, however, due to a few injuries we are experiencing.

·           If an athlete is injured, please make arrangements to see the trainer at the high school. Her name is Beth Hauck and she is available from 3-4 p.m., Monday

                 – Friday. No appointment is necessary and there is no charge!

We are getting a new tent! There will be no need for donations for a tent. Thanks for your help in this!

If you go to the blog for directions there is a spot on the right side of the blog titled: Cross Country Meet Directions.  That is where you will find directions to all the meets.

(Also, below that are the links to the meet results.)

This first link are directions that I got from Mapquest:

This second link are directions I found from the Wadsworth School Districts website.  This map shows more detailed information once you enter the Wadsworth community:

Thanks for your help so far this season, see you Saturday!

Here’s the information regarding the Bruce Lerch Invitational at Brecksville High School:
· Athletes need to be at Learwood at 5:50 a.m.
· Bus leaves at 6 a.m.
· Boys’ Team runs at 8:30 a.m.
Patrick Schulte, Ryan Becker, Brandon Baiers, Robert Hoffman, Alex Holtz, Christian Stephens, and Stefan Nieschwitz
· Girls’ Team runs at 9 a.m.
Julia Jantz, Allie Spensley, Audrey Spensley, Juliana Dotson, Emily Lambert, Josephine Klingshirn, and Sarah Lucas
· Boys’ Open (all other boy runners) runs at 9:30 a.m.
· Girls’ Open (all other girl runners) runs at 10 a.m.
· Our estimated time of arrival back at Learwood is noon. We will have athletes call home when we are almost back in Avon Lake!
· We will try to locate our tent near the finish line. Any parents that want to find their child can look there, and we would appreciate any supervision after the race. There will be more down-time for athletes at this meet, so any parents at the campsite are encouraged to direct athletes to the course so they can cheer on teammates after their race!
Some reminders about the meet:
· Bring something to eat as it will be a long ride home.
· Parents, Brecksville is asking that you park either at the high school or the middle school, but DO NOT PARK IN THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PARKING LOT.
· Make sure to sign out your child with Coach Walters. She will either be at the start/finish line (this meet’s start/finish is in the same area) or the team campsite (which is also close to the start/finish).
· This race’s results will be posted online: www.baumspage.com. On that webpage, click on Cross Country. Then scroll down to Bruce Lerch Invitational (9/10/11).
· This course is not fan-friendly…basically the runners will run uphill, turn around, and run downhill. There should be course maps at the meet (at the elementary school…right by our campsite), but you really will only be able to see the start and finish of the race.
· This is a very fun atmosphere, however, so you might want to bring money for t-shirts, food, and Dippin’ Dots (if you want).
About the team:
· The team is improving! Last week was awesome: athletes performed well as a team and a lot of individual goals were set and broken. We also got a lot of help with the campsite, and team support was great. Keep it up!
· Continue to display excellent sportsmanship at this meet—we get a lot of compliments from other teams/coaches on the size, talent, and especially the behavior of our Avon Lakers. Keep this up as well!
· This meet will help determine who runs team/open races at next week’s Wadsworth Invitational. The top 7 runners will be on team, all other runners will be open runners, but all runners will have the opportunity to run.
· Please check The Press as we have been sending results to the paper the last couple of weeks.
· The kids voted on a quote for the back of their t-shirts. This was the winning quote:
CROSS COUNTRY
No halftimes, no time-outs, no substitutions
It must be the only true sport
· Finally, if an athlete is injured you can take him/her to the ALHS trainer at the high school. She is available after school, but said 3:30 – 4 p.m. is the least busy time. Also, there will be a doctor there on Tuesdays from 3 – 3:30 p.m. (free of charge). No appointment is necessary to see the trainer.
Thanks for your help so far this season, see you Saturday!

Updates and Events

Parents:
PICTURES:
Kim Krock has created a Shutterfly site for the Learwood Cross Country Team! This will allow you to easily share pictures (those you have taken, or see those others have taken).
In an attempt to help safeguard our team’s information, this is a private site and requires approval to view.
To access the site you will need a Shutterfly account. If you do not have one, go to www.shutterfly.com and click on “sign up” at the top of the page and follow the directions to create an account.
Once you have an account, please go to: www.learwood.shutterfly.com. You will get a message telling you that the site is private and permission is required for access. Click on “ASK” at the bottom of the message to request access. You’ll be brought to a page where you can enter your name and a message. Please enter your name, then put your runner’s name and grade in the message section so you can be verified as a member of the Learwood Cross Country Team community. You will receive an e-mail when you have been approved as a member of the site. IF YOU HAVE OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS (GRANDPARENTS, ETC) WHO WILL BE WANTING TO ACCESS THE SITE, BE SURE TO SEND KIM AN E-MAIL AHEAD OF TIME (kkrock@centurytel.net) SO SHE KNOWS WHO THEY ARE! Ask them to identify themselves along with the runner’s name & grade in the request comments.
Adding pictures to the site is easy! Send an e-mail to learwood@sfly.com. Put the name of the folder (it’ll be the date of the race) in the subject line – exactly as written on the website. Put your picture(s) as attachments to the e-mail and hit ‘send’! They’ll be added to the picture albums! Pictures from meets, practices, events, the bus, dinners – all things Cross Country!
These pictures will be used by Kim to create a DVD at the end of the season (or you can still submit them to her directly by e-mail, disk or USB drive). BUT, if you see some great photos of your child, you can also purchase them from the Shutterfly site as a print, book or other options.
DINNERS
The volunteer spots are all filled! HOORAY! Schedule will be posted on the blog. If you haven’t already sent me your child’s name and phone number, please do so. If you volunteered and aren’t on the schedule, it probably means that things didn’t get confirmed before someone else volunteered for the same thing. I had a couple of parents that I was playing e-mail tag with, and spots filled before we caught up with each other (another reason I’m looking for phone numbers!).
TEAM GEAR
The order form is up on the Learwood X-C Blog. Make sure you are checking this site regularly as it makes it easy for the coaches to communicate with the team! There is other new information up on the site this week. http://learwoodmiddleschoolcrosscountry.blogspot.com/
Have a great day!
Pam Verfaillie

September 3rd Early Bird INFO

Cross Country Parents:
Here's the information regarding the Avon Lake EarlyBird Invitational at Lorain County Community College (LCCC).
* Athletes need to be at Learwood at 6 a.m.
* Bus leaves at 6:15 a.m.
* Boys run at 8 a.m.
* Girls run at 8:30 a.m.
* Our estimated time of arrival back at Learwood is between 10 - 10:30 a.m. We will have athletes call home once we leave LCCC so parents can arrange
transportation home from Learwood.
* Avon Lake is hosting this meet, and our Athletic Department has asked the coaching staff to notify parents that we may need volunteers to help out. If
you are interested in volunteering, please contact our Athletic Director, Tom Barone, at tom.barone@avonlakecityschools.org.
Some reminders about the meet:
* Bring extra apparel (t-shirt, sweatshirt/sweatpants, shorts, extra socks, sandals)
Athletes should only wear sandals when they are back on the bus!
* Bring a healthy snack, something healthy to drink, and a cell phone to call home on our way back to Avon Lake.
* Parents, continue signing out with Coach Walters if you are taking your child home with you. Only parents can sign out athletes. Coach Walters will
either be at the finish line, start line, or at the campsite-but she will most likely be at the finish line.
* After the race, results will be posted online at www.baumspage.com. On that webpage, click on Cross Country. Then scroll down to Avon Lake
Invitational (9/3/11). Click there to find out results. Please note: results may not be updated until later in the day that Saturday or perhaps even into the
day on Sunday.
* Course maps are the same as last week's, which you should be able to access on the team blog site. We will also provide copies on race day.
About the team:
* Team behavior at the meet was excellent. We will be assigning jobs for athletes on race day so the set-up and break-down of the camp runs as
smoothly as last week . Any parent who could help in supervision of our camp after the races would be appreciated!
* Team support last week was awesome! Let's keep it up this week--it's important to cheer on other runners as they need
encouragement throughout their races.
* Runners must show excellent sportsmanship again this week-we will continue to be respectful of other teams. If there are
any issues with other teams please let me know but so far so good!
* The races this week will determine who runs the team/open races at Brecksville. The top 7 runners will be on team, all other
runners will be open runners, but all runners will have the
opportunity to run.
* We will have an OPTIONAL practice on Labor Day. We were thinking of holding it at the Cleveland MetroParks from 9 – 10:45 a.m. If you are in town,
come join us. If not, we will post workouts on the team blog site this weekend. ATHLETES NEED TO RUN ON MONDAY! If you plan on attending
Monday’s practice, parents will need to drive athletes to the MetroParks. We will meet at the boat launch in Rocky River…we will send directions in the
next couple of days (we’ll also put it on the blog).
Thanks for your help so far this season! The athletes are working very hard this week and we are impressed! Let’s keep it up and we’ll see you Saturday!
